Water Heaters & Boilers Explained

It’s easy to get confused between boilers and water heaters since both technically heat water, but just for different purposes. Here’s a quick explanation of this equipment and your options:

• Water heaters: Water heaters raise the temperature of the water that you’ll use in your fixtures, like your shower, sinks, and tubs. Traditional water heaters have a tank and keep your water warm at all times, ready for when you demand it. However, the water does run out. A larger tank means more warm water, but at a higher cost.
• Boilers: Boilers also have a tank of water that they keep warm. However, this water is meant just as a vector that releases heat to your home. Boilers are used in radiant heating systems. They pump the hot water through your floor or to a radiator. The water releases heat to warm up your home. While boilers are old technology, the modern ones are highly efficient.
• Tankless water heaters: Tankless water heaters do not have tanks. Instead, they heat water on-demand, as it moves through your pipes. While they supply a smaller amount of hot water at one time, they never run out of hot water. Tankless water heater installations are a bit more involved, but they also save space in your home.
